Today, I want to talk about a question that I get often which is, “How do I get started with getting my website up?”
One of the biggest challenges that people face is that they want their website to look like the other websites that have been out there forever. I know I faced this when I first started building sites about 10 years ago. There are websites that have been out there for years, and they look beautiful. They’ve got lots of pages. They’ve got lots of content and images. They’re, quite frankly, breath-taking.
However, you’ve got to understand when you’re just starting out, your site is not going to look anything like that.
That is the hard truth. But, you’ve also got to realize that your website is a living, breathing creation, and it’s only going to develop over time. So, how do you get your website up fast and even today, if you don’t have anything just yet?

What should you have in your website when you’re just getting started?
If you’re familiar with landing pages, there’s lots of different software, like Leadpages and Thrive, that you can use to help you create one. I personally use Thrive Themes.
Here’s the deal. When you’re building your first website, your homepage essentially is your landing page. You want to make sure that you have at least one page, and that’s your home page.
A good example would be resume sites, which are static sites. These are one-page websites that sort of gives you an overview of the person who owns the site, like if you’re a designer or an IT professional.
Whatever your profession, you can create your own static resume site. You can put a picture of yourself and a description of your job title, just like you would in LinkedIn or on your other social media profiles. You can place this information on the top part of your page, which is called the hero section. Under this, you can add in some links to your social media, a short text that describes you, what expertise you bring to the table, and maybe a little fun fact about yourself.
That’s it.

What tools can you use in creating your website?
If you use WordPress, you can use something like Thrive. I use Thrive Themes and I highly recommend it because it’s easy to use. It’s a visual drag-and-drop page builder. They also have templates and themes that you can use to get your site up and running really quickly and easily today.
If you have some coding skills, then great! Just create your first page using any free page builder. If you want to write and do it from scratch, you can do that as well, but don’t try to do everything at once.
And remember…
Don’t try to get everything perfect in your site or page off-the-bat. You don’t need all those navigation links and multiple pages if you’re just getting started. Keep things simple.
All you need to do is just get started.
